MALELANE, South Africa (Reuters) – Briton Robert Rock chased the birdies but gave a dangerous snake the slip on his way to a six-under 66 in the first round of the Dunhill Championship at Leopard's Creek Thursday.
"There was a black mamba out there," Rock said of his close encounter with one of Africa's most venomous reptiles on the course adjacent to Kruger National Park. "There were a couple of people poking around after it.
"It was between the seventh green and the eighth tee. I gave that a bit of a wide berth. Scared me off a bit," said Rock, who sank seven birdies.
